Match, meld, and make ‘em jealous.
Rummy is all about making matches—collect sets of three or more cards in the same rank or run of the same suit. On your turn, draw a card, try to build or improve your sets, and discard one to end your turn. The goal? Be the first to play all your tiles and yell “Rummy!” before your cousin figures out what you’re up to.
How to Play Like a Pro
Because Grandma is Tired of Letting You Win
-
Setup:
-
Use a standard 52-card deck (add a second deck if more than 4 players).
-
Deal 10 cards to each player (just 7 if playing with more than 4).
-
Place the rest in a draw pile. Flip one card face-up next to it to start the discard pile.
-
-
The Goal:
-
Build melds, either:
-
Sets – 3 or 4 cards of the same number (like 7♦ 7♠ 7♣)
-
Runs – 3 or more cards in sequence of the same suit (like 4♠ 5♠ 6♠)
-
-
Get rid of all your cards by melding, laying off, or discarding!
-
-
Taking Turns:
-
Each turn, players:
-
Draw one card (either from the draw pile or the top of the discard pile)
-
Meld or lay off cards if possible (optional)
-
Discard one card to end their turn
-
-
You can add cards to other players' melds if it fits! (Example: add 5♠ to their 3♠ 4♠)
-
-
Ending the Round:
-
The round ends when a player plays all their cards—or if only one card is left in the draw pile.
-
Everyone else totals up the points left in their hands. Low score wins the round!
-
-
Scoring:
-
Face cards = 10 points
-
Aces = 1 point
-
Number cards = face value
-
Play to a target score (like 100 or 500), or just go round-by-round for bragging rights!
